Facts on Yolo County’s Criminal Justice System

Mass Incarceration
  • Yolo County is in the top quarter of California counties for its incarceration rate (measured as incarcerations per 1,000 felony arrests)
  • In Yolo County, 0.9% of 10-17-year-olds are in the criminal justice system—the 3rd highest percentage of any county in the state
Racial Disparities
  • In Yolo County, a Black adult is nearly 10x more likely to be imprisoned than a white adult (by comparison, a Black adult is about 9x more likely to be imprisoned than a white adult statewide and 6x more likely nationwide)
  • A Latino adult in Yolo County is more than 2x more likely to be imprisoned than a white adult
  • Since 2013, 93% of the youth charged as adults in Yolo County have been Latino
Overcharging & Waste
  • Yolo has the highest rate of per capita jury trials of any county in California
  • 41% of the current DA’s felony charges are acquitted or dismissed by a judge—more than twice the state average
  • Yolo has more felony jury trials than Alameda County—which has a population over 7x larger than Yolo’s
  • Only 13% of misdemeanor cases are resolved within 30 days in Yolo, compared to 58% statewide (only one county is lower than Yolo)
